Client Resources Effective Interviewing Tips

Because your time is valuable and interviewing is just one of your many roles within your organization, we have found the following tips helpful to our clients.

Prior to conducting your interview:

  • Define the skills and personality characteristics needed for this position.
  • Rank your skills/characteristics to identify the priority of each to the position.
  • Prepare a list of questions that will help you determine the candidate’s skill and fit for the position.
  • Review the candidate’s resume and highlight key areas to focus on and clarify during the interview.

During the interview:

  • Hold all your calls and interruptions.  It is not professional to read emails or take calls during the interview.
  • Make the candidate feel comfortable.
  • Use open-ended questions to gain a better understanding of the candidate’s character.
  • Be consistent: ask each candidate the same questions so you can evaluate them equally.

After the interview:

  • Make detailed notes as soon as the interview is over, while your memory is fresh.
  • Using the ranking of skills and characteristics identified, assign a score to the candidate.  This will help you objectively evaluate each candidate after you have completed all interviews.
  • Contact your HireSolutions consultant with any questions or feedback.

Here are some questions you should be asking yourself:

  • What did you do in the last year to enhance your work or visibility?
  • How many new people did you meet, and how many of them became part of your network?
  • Did you join a new association, or get more involved in your current association?
  • Are you aligned with an outstanding recruiter that actively works your market?

If you are like most professionals, it’s likely that you made a few networking contacts, didn’t join a professional group and you aren’t talking to a recruiter. In our current changing market it is critical for you to strategically think about your career and where you want to go. Outstanding career don’t just happen they are designed.
